Frequently asked questions about SAT scores

How is the Digital SAT scored?

Each section (Reading and Writing, Math) gives one raw point per correct answer with no penalty for wrong answers. The raw score is converted to a 200–800 scaled score through equating, taking into account which adaptive Module 2 you received, and the two section scores add to a 400–1600 total. See how the SAT is scored.

How do I calculate my SAT score from a practice test?

Count your correct answers in each module and enter them in the SAT score calculator. It converts each section, accounts for the adaptive route, and shows your total with a likely range and percentile.

Is the SAT out of 1600 or 2400?

1600. The 2400 scale ended in 2016 when the Writing section was merged into Reading and Writing. Any range quoted out of 2400 is out of date.

What is a raw score versus a scaled score?

The raw score is your count of correct answers (out of 54 in Reading and Writing, 44 in Math). The scaled score is that count converted to the 200–800 section scale so that scores are comparable across test forms.

What are Module 1 and Module 2, and why does the route matter?

Each section is two modules. Your Module 1 result decides whether Module 2 is the harder or easier version. Harder questions are worth more, so only the harder path can reach 800; the easier path tops out in the high 500s even with every Module 2 answer correct.

How accurate is an SAT score calculator?

Usually within about 30 points per section. College Board publishes no fixed conversion table for the Digital SAT and equates each form separately, so every calculator estimates from the official practice tests. Treat the result as a range, not a promise.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. Wrong answers and blanks both score zero, so you should answer every question.

What is a good SAT score?

The average is about 1025 (College Board’s class-of-2024 mean was 1024). A 1200 is above roughly 75% of test-takers, a 1350 is top 10%, and a 1500 is top 2–3%. What counts as good depends on your colleges’ middle-50% ranges; see what is a good SAT score.

Is 1000 a good SAT score? What about 1100, 1200, 1300 or 1400?

A 1000 is a little below the national average (47th percentile); 1100 is above average (62nd); 1200 is good (75th); 1300 is very good (85th); 1400 is excellent (93rd). Each has its own page: 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400.

Is 1400 enough for Harvard or another Ivy?

A 1400 is a top-7% score but below the middle-50% range at the Ivies, which typically begins around 1480–1500. It will not disqualify you in a holistic review, but most admitted students score higher.

How do SAT percentiles work?

A percentile is the share of test-takers at or below your score. College Board publishes two kinds: SAT User (students who actually took the SAT, the figure colleges use) and Nationally Representative (all US juniors and seniors, a few points higher). Full tables on the percentiles page.

How do I convert a PSAT score to an SAT score?

You do not need a formula: the PSAT and SAT share one scale, so a PSAT 1200 predicts an SAT 1200 today. The PSAT ceiling is 1520. College Board reports scores rise about 40 points on average when the SAT is taken six or more months later, and students who prepare deliberately often gain 100 points or more. Use the PSAT to SAT converter.

How do I convert an ACT score to an SAT score?

Use the official ACT/College Board concordance: for example, ACT 30 ≈ SAT 1370, ACT 33 ≈ 1460, ACT 36 ≈ 1590. The ACT to SAT converter handles both directions.

What is superscoring, and which colleges do it?

A superscore combines your highest Reading and Writing and highest Math from different test dates. Most colleges superscore the SAT; some use your best single sitting; a few consider every score. Check each college’s policy and use the superscore calculator.

How much can I raise my SAT score between attempts?

From the 1000–1200 range, focused preparation over two to three months commonly adds 100–200 points. Above 1400, gains come in steps of 30–60. See how to improve your SAT score.

Does the calculator work for the paper SAT or the old SAT?

It is built for the Digital SAT (in use since March 2024, with 54 Reading and Writing and 44 Math questions). It does not apply to the pre-2024 paper test, which had different sections and counts.

When are SAT scores released?

Typically about two weeks after a weekend test date, usually on a Friday. School-day tests can take a little longer. Bluebook practice tests score immediately.

How many times can I take the SAT?

There is no limit. The test is offered seven times a year in the US (March, May, June, August, October, November, December). Two or three sittings is typical; most colleges let you choose which dates to send.
