Start with the gap, not the study plan
Take one full-length official practice test in Bluebook under timed conditions and run the results through the score predictor. Then compare it with the top of the middle-50% range at your colleges (see what is a good SAT score). The size of that gap decides everything else: a 60-point gap is a few weeks of targeted work; a 250-point gap is a semester and a change in habits.
Rule 1: Module 1 accuracy is worth double
The Digital SAT decides which Module 2 you get from your Module 1 performance, and only the harder Module 2 reaches the top of the scale. On the official practice tests the switch happens around 17 of 27 in Reading and Writing and 12 of 22 in Math. If you are near that line, the single highest-value change is to be more careful, not faster, on the first module: slow down on the easy and medium questions, which are the ones a rushed student throws away. Being routed to the easier module caps a section in the high 500s regardless of what you do next.
Rule 2: review misses harder than you practise
Most students take too many tests and review too few. For every missed question, write down why: content you did not know, a rule you half-knew, a misread, or running out of time. Sort the list. Content gaps get a drill; misreads get a slower first pass; time problems get pacing practice. A student who fully reviews four tests learns more than one who half-reviews ten.
Highest-yield content by section
Reading and Writing
- Standard English Conventions (about a quarter of the section): punctuation, subject–verb agreement, modifiers, verb tense. Rules-based and fast to learn; the best points-per-hour on the whole test.
- Vocabulary in context and transitions: predictable question types with a repeatable method. Cover the choices, decide what the sentence needs, then match.
- Command of evidence and inference: answer only from the passage. Wrong answers on these questions are usually true statements that the passage does not support.
Math
- Algebra and advanced math (linear equations, systems, quadratics, functions) make up well over half the section. Master these before anything exotic.
- The built-in Desmos calculator: learn to graph a system or an inequality in seconds. It turns many algebra questions into reading a point off a screen.
- Word problems and data: translate the sentence into an equation before touching numbers; most errors are set-up errors.
Pacing on an adaptive test
You can flag and return to any question within a module, so use it: answer everything you know, mark the rest, come back. Never leave a blank, since there is no penalty. Aim to finish each module with two minutes to check flagged items. If you consistently run out of time, the fix is usually reading precision on the early questions, not speed on the hard ones.
How much a score can move, and how fast
From around 1000–1200, well-directed work over two to three months commonly adds 100–200 points, because the middle of the scale is generous and the content gaps are large and fixable. From 1400 upward, each remaining miss costs more and the gains come in steps of 30–60 points. Above 1500, improvement is mostly about eliminating careless errors under time pressure. Plan two or three sittings and use superscoring where your colleges allow it, so each retake can focus on one section.
A simple eight-week plan
- Week 1: diagnostic practice test; sort every miss by cause; pick the two weakest domains per section.
- Weeks 2–3: drill those domains (Khan Academy’s official practice, Bluebook question sets); one timed module a day.
- Week 4: full practice test; re-sort the misses; adjust the domains.
- Weeks 5–6: repeat the drill cycle; add pacing practice for any module you did not finish.
- Week 7: full practice test; review; run it through the calculator to check your expected range.
- Week 8: light review, sleep, test.
