What a 510 PSAT score means

The PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and SAT are built on a single College Board scale, so there is no conversion formula: a 510 on the PSAT represents the same skill level as an SAT 510 on the day you took it. That SAT score is low, at the 1st percentile of SAT takers (top 99%).

What to expect on the SAT

Most students take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of junior year and the SAT the following spring, and the gap between them is where scores move. College Board reports that scores generally rise about 20 points per section, 40 in total, when the SAT is taken six or more months after a PSAT-related assessment, which would put a 510 at roughly 550. With a few months of deliberate practice, a typical student lands between 510 and 610; without preparation, most score close to their PSAT. The largest gains come from the areas your PSAT score report flags as weakest, usually a few grammar rules in Reading and Writing and core algebra in Math. The improvement guide lays out a plan, and is 510 a good SAT score shows what your current level means for colleges.

National Merit context

National Merit does not use the PSAT total. It uses the Selection Index: (2 × Reading and Writing section score + Math section score) ÷ 10, on a 48–228 scale, from the 11th-grade PSAT/NMSQT only. A 510 total is well below National Merit cutoffs, which are not the goal for most students anyway. Cutoffs are set per state each year and have recently ranged from around 207 to 223 for Semifinalist standing. Two students with the same total can have different Selection Indexes because Reading and Writing counts double.

510 PSAT: frequently asked questions

What SAT score does a 510 PSAT predict?

About 510 today. The PSAT and SAT share one vertical scale, so a 510 reflects the same skill level as an SAT 510. College Board's data shows scores rise about 40 points on average when the SAT is taken six or more months later, so around 550; with deliberate preparation, students with this PSAT typically land between 510 and 610.

Is 510 a good PSAT score?

A 510 corresponds to an SAT 510, which is low: the 1st percentile of SAT takers (top 99%). For a junior, it is well below National Merit cutoffs, which are not the goal for most students anyway.

What is a 510 PSAT on the ACT?

Below an SAT-equivalent of 590, the official concordance does not give an ACT composite.

Does a PSAT score guarantee an SAT score?

No. It is a prediction as of the day you took it. Skills grow, the SAT includes harder content the PSAT omits, and test-day variation is real. Take an official practice SAT and use the score predictor for a fresher estimate.
